There’s nothing quite like slipping into a perfectly made hotel bed with crisp, fresh white sheets. At 19 on Bloekom, we take pride in providing that luxury experience for every guest. Today, we’re sharing our professional secrets so you can recreate that same feeling at home.
Why White Sheets?
Professional hospitality establishments prefer white bedding for good reason:
- Cleanliness is visible – stains can’t hide on white fabric
- Easy to bleach – white linens can be sanitised at high temperatures
- Timeless elegance – white never goes out of style
- Psychological comfort – white signals cleanliness to guests
The Secret: It’s All in the Thread Count (Sort Of)
You’ve probably heard that higher thread count means better sheets. Here’s the truth: thread count matters, but only up to a point.
Our recommendation:
- 300-400 thread count – The sweet spot for most people
- 100% cotton percale – Crisp, cool, and breathable
- Egyptian or Pima cotton – Longer fibres mean softer, more durable sheets
Tip: Avoid anything claiming 1000+ thread count – it’s usually marketing hype with inferior multi-ply threads.
Our Professional Washing Routine
Here’s exactly how we keep our sheets brilliantly white:
Step 1: Pre-Treatment
For any stains, we apply a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water directly to the spot. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.
Step 2: The Wash
- Water temperature: 60°C (hot enough to sanitise, not so hot it damages fibres)
- Detergent: Half the recommended amount of a quality powder detergent
- Boosters: Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle for softness
- No fabric softener! It coats fibres and reduces absorbency
Step 3: The Secret Whitening Agent
Once a month, we add 1/4 cup of bicarbonate of soda + 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the wash. This natural combination works wonders without the harshness of bleach.
Step 4: Drying
- Line dry in direct sunlight when possible – UV rays naturally bleach and disinfect
- If using a tumble dryer, remove sheets while slightly damp
- Iron immediately for that crisp hotel finish
The Hospital Corner Technique
That perfectly tucked look? It’s called a hospital corner (or military corner). Here’s how:
- Lay the flat sheet over the mattress with equal overhang on all sides
- Tuck the bottom edge under the mattress
- At each corner, lift the side of the sheet about 30cm from the foot of the bed
- Tuck the hanging part under the mattress
- Drop the lifted part and tuck it under smoothly
- Repeat on all corners
Practice makes perfect – after a few tries, you’ll have it mastered!
How Often Should You Change Your Sheets?
At 19 on Bloekom, we change sheets after every guest. For home use:
- Weekly – Ideal for most people
- Every 3-4 days – If you sweat a lot or have allergies
- Immediately – After illness
Investing in Quality
Good sheets are an investment in better sleep. We recommend these South African retailers:
- @Home
- Sheet Street
- Woolworths (their Supima cotton range is excellent)
- Mr Price Home (great budget option)
